Toll Collector's Office

toll collector office

There were two toll collector offices on the Chemung Canal. The photo to the left shows the Horseheads toll collector's office (the red arrow points to the building). It was situated where the feeder canal met the main canal. It stood just north of Hanover Square, where the Horseheads fire department is today. The other toll collector's office was in Havana (Montour Falls). Whenever there was a vacancy in the job there was much competition to secure the post, and contenders relied on pulling political strings and calling in favors to get endorsements to help land the position.

Thomas Maxwell

Pictured to the left is Thomas Maxwell. Maxwell was the first toll collector for the Chemung Canal. Ironically, the same thing that killed the canal also killed Maxwell. He was struck and killed by a locomotive in Elmira in 1864.
