This map shows the route of the Chemung Canal through Elmira in 1855. Two basins can be seen along the canal and the map also shows the connection between the Chemung Canal and the Junction Canal. The Junction Canal, a private enterprise, connected to the North Branch Canal in Pennsylvania at Athens. The Junction Canal brought a great deal of Pennsylvania coal to the Chemung Canal.
