This map shows both the route of the feeder canal from Gibson to Horseheads and the route of the main canal from Elmira to Watkins Glen. The feeder canal joined the Chemung Canal in Horseheads where the Horseheads Fire Department is located. The many small numbers along the line of the canal represent the locks on the canal. Because the land rose over 400 feet from Watkins Glen to Horseheads, many locks (53) were required on the Chemung Canal.
