This dam was built in the Chemung River near Corning, N.Y. at a place called the Chimney Narrows. The dam created a large pool of water to supply most of the water for the Chemung Canal. Often the amount of water was not enough, which caused great difficulties in getting boats through the canal. The feeder canal traveled from Gibson to Horseheads. Note the people in the small boat about to ride over the dam.

This photo, taken around 1870, shows the bridge and the guard lock to the feeder canal at Gibson, near Corning, N.Y. The dam is visible in the right background.

The guard lock is shown in this photograph. The guard lock, located at Gibson near Corning, N.Y., let water into the canal at the dam on the Chemung River. This photo was also taken around 1870.

This photo shows the feeder canal today behind Sam's Club at Consumer Square in Big Flats.
