Young David Hill

This is a photograph of David Hill. As a youth, Hill worked a lock in Havana (Montour Falls) with his friend, Joe Dolph. Hill's father was a boatman on the canal. Hill and Dolph later went to law school. Hill entered politics and served as Lieutenant Governor and then Governor of New York State. After leaving the Governor's chair in 1891, Hill was chosen to be one of New York's U.S. Senators. In the Senate chamber, Hill sat next to a familiar face. Joe Dolph had moved to Oregon and had also been elected to the U.S. Senate. The two friends were reunited in Congress.
